Kindle Dashboard

Our old Kindle Paperwhite was gathering dust, so I turned it into a dashboard that hangs by the front door. One look before you leave: the weather and whether you need an umbrella, today's appointments from the family calendar, paper and cardboard collection, and the next trams and trains, including when you have to leave to catch them. It's not just a display. Tap a tile and you get the details: weather for 24 hours and the week, departures in both directions, the next seven days. The shopping list is synced with Bring!, so you can tick items off, mark them urgent or add new ones on the on-screen keyboard right at the wall. Household chores work the same way. At night it switches to a calm screen and stops refreshing. Under the hood, a Node server renders each view as a web page with Chromium and turns it into a 16-gray e-ink image. A small Go program on the jailbroken Kindle fetches the image every two minutes and sends taps back. Secrets stay on the server, and if the Kindle stops calling in, you get a push notification. Vibe-coded with Claude Code, from reverse-engineering the touch input to the last e-ink refresh. Open source under MIT.
